It’s been a bit doom and gloom in Birmingham recently, but we have some good news to share with you all. The Frankfurt Christmas Market will take place this year – despite the City Council’s financial woes – organisers have confirmed. So deck the halls with boughs of holly and belt out your favourite Christmas carols, Christmas is coming!
A five-year deal to keep the iconic market running until 2027 was signed last year, confirmed Kurt Stroscher – who looks after the Christmas markets in both Birmingham and our twin city of Frankfurt. So we can guarantee Christmas won’t be cancelled in Birmingham for 2023, as it more than pays for itself.
Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market will once again fill New Street and Victoria Square in 2023 and will be held from November 2 until Christmas Eve. It is the largest authentic German Christmas market outside of Germany and Austria. Drawing people from all over the country, this massive tourist attraction brings in around £350m each year.
“My heart belongs in Birmingham and I have celebrated Christmas with the people of Birmingham for so many years now,” said Kurt Stroscher to the BBC. “It is always a pleasure to share our Christmas with the city.”
What can I find at Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market?
Nothing major has been confirmed yet, except that there will be over a hundred stalls at the Christmas Market in 2023. It will be open every day from 10am to 9pm for an incredible 52 days (two more than last year) of Christmas celebrations in the city centre! This is the place to be if you’re after traditional gifts or Christmas snacks.
You’ll be able to grab things like mulled wine, stollen, weissbier, pretzels, bratwursts, hot chocolate and other Xmas goodies. As well as, handcrafted wooden decorations, glass baubles, leatherwork, toys, jewellery and more! Whether we’ll see the return of the ice rink or the Ferris wheel at Centenary Square this year, remains to be seen.
