Summer’s almost here, and we’re dreaming of all the great things that come with it: We’re talking beaches, BBQs, outdoor dining, holidays, swimming, and wherever else you can think of to cool down. But while we can’t promise perfect weather, there’s one thing we can guarantee and that’s longer days. Because Birmingham’s first 8PM sunset of the year is happening this week.
On Saturday, April 12, the sunset in Birmingham will take place at 20:01 exactly. That’s the latest the sun has set in over seven months, since August 29 of last year. But, rest easy, it won’t be going down this early again for four and a half months when, on August 29, 2025, the Birmingham sunset is once again at 20:01. But there’s no reason to be thinking that far ahead yet…
Between now and then, we’ve plenty of glorious days to look forward to, and so many better things to occupy our minds with. A day trip to the flower fields, anyone? On Saturday, we’ll be experiencing nearly 14 hours of daylight, but this will rise close to 17 hours during the height of summer.
On the longest day of the year (June 21), the sunset in Birmingham won’t take place until 21:34, while the sunrise of that day happens at 04.44. If you’re crazy enough to be up that early, you’ll experience 16 hours, 49 minutes and 37 seconds of pure daylight – unless, of course, it’s raining. But what good is all that sunshine if there’s nothing to do?
Luckily, Birmingham’s summer schedule is already looking chocka. Just some of the big events we can expect include MADE Festival‘s brand-new summer gig series, Black Sabbath‘s farwell ‘Final Show’, Moseley Folk & Arts Festival, Mostly Jazz Festival, the opening of a brand new food hall, and so much moremore. But if all you want to do this summer is chill in a beer garden, we won’t blame you!
