You are probably bored of being reminded that Birmingham has no beaches. Yes, there are some amazing coastal towns and beaches you can visit, but they’re not exactly within walking distance. (If you need nearby places to swim in the heat you might want to check out these outdoor swimming spots.) But what if we told you that Birmingham will soon get its very own beach?
Our landlocked city will have all the fun of a seaside town this summer – sand, slides and a funfair – so you won’t need to worry about a two-hour drive anywhere. Digbeth Funfair and Beach will return this year (renamed Birmingham Beach) with a new location in Birmingham City Centre. So start digging out the basket and spades today!
Promising to be bigger than ever, you can expect not only a proper sandy beach but water features, a funfair full of theme park rides, deckchairs for lounging on and, of course, ice cream and a bar. You can also expect a proper food court area full of sweet treats and fairground foods. Setting up at Smithfield, near the Bullring & Grand Central, Birmingham Beach will add proper holiday vibes to our city.
Currently, tonnes of sand has arrived at the site already, as have many rides and slides. But there’s still plenty of work to do. You won’t have to wait much longer for a quick seaside trip in Birmingham though. Organisers have set their eyes on July 14 as the opening. A great way to start the July weekend.
“Rides are arriving daily but most important over 500 tonnes of sand has arrived to build Birmingham’s biggest ever beach. The water feature and slides will be arriving soon,” said organisers Danter Attractions on Facebook. “We can’t wait to show what we have in store for you this year.”
Birmingham Beach sets up on Pershore Street, Smithfield, B5 4RW. To learn more head to the Facebook page here.
