We’re no strangers to a big Ferris wheel in Birmingham. Every winter, we’ve become accustomed to the near-iconic Christmas wheel in Centenary Square. With stunning views across Birmingham’s skyline, it’s a yearly highlight we all look forward to. But you won’t have to wait nearly as long to experience it in 2024, as another huge wheel lands on the historic grounds of Birmingham Cathedral next week (May 24).
Settling in for summer (until September 1), Cathedral Square Wheel will open in Pigeon Park from 11am to 10pm daily – ascending to breathtaking heights, with even more breathtaking views, no matter the time of day. Can you imagine seeing Birmingham at sunset up here though?
You’ll climb to the height of the Selfridges building at a staggering 35 metres high and see far beyond it. You might even learn something about this city too! Step into one of the 24 spacious gondolas (each can hold up to 6 people) and listen to captivating commentary by local legend and BBC historian, Carl Chinn. He’ll provide depth and insight into the vibrant history and culture of Birmingham.
Cathedral Square Wheel is brought to you by Danter Attractions, who are the team behind Christmas in Cathedral Square, Ice Skate Birmingham and the Christmas Wheel in Centenary Square. Meanwhile, Birmingham Cathedral is the oldest building in the city centre still used for its original purpose. The cathedral is free to visit and is home to four beautiful stained-glass windows designed by Pre-Raphaelite artist, Edward Burne-Jones.
“We are constantly striving to offer new and exciting experiences to our visitors, and Cathedral Square Wheel will provide a unique perspective on Birmingham’s skyline,” said Anna Pitt, CEO at Birmingham Cathedral. “We also want to encourage everyone, especially first-time visitors, to step into the cathedral and see our stunning and colourful windows for themselves.”
