Okay, we don’t want to stir up any trouble, but with National Tea Day (April 21) fast approaching, we’ve been inundated with tea-related studies. The most shocking of all is the latest study by supermarket experts at Britsuperstore. It’s creating a storm in teacup by naming Birmingham as the ‘Tea Capital’ of the UK!
The study was inspired by a recent survey that found that 45% of Brits enjoy a cuppa 2 to 5 times a day. That’s 50 billion cups a year – only confirming what we already knew, that the UK is a nation of tea lovers. The same survey also found that only 12% of West Midlanders consider themselves “tea addicts” compared to 23% of Londoners. So how did Birmingham end up becoming the Tea Capital?
Well, the answer is Google. Collecting data on searches for the most popular UK tea and biscuit brands, it seems Birmingham is the nation’s thirstiest city. Birmingham’s basically only the ‘Tea Capital’ of the UK because it’s the city with the highest search volume for tea-related queries. Meanwhile, it also stood out as the city that searches the most for biscuit brands to pair with its tea.
“Birmingham has cemented its reputation as the ‘Tea Capital’ of the UK, as locals exhibit a strong taste for a wide variety of tea tastes and brands,” said Director of Britsuperstore, Richard Price. “The city leads in searches for some of the most popular tea brands in the UK like Typhoo, as well as a range of tea flavours including green tea, the most popular flavour of tea in the UK according to our results!”
Yorkshire Tea was the most popular tea brand in the UK, with over 18% of Brits searching for the product. But Twinings, Ahmad Tea and Typhoo also hold a special place in many Brummies’ hearts. It’s these diverse tastes that only added to our coronation as the Tea Capital. For another Birmingham triumph, the nation’s favourite biscuit brand overall is Cadbury, with a search volume of 63%.
Richard added, “Birmingham also stands out as the city that searches the most for beloved biscuit brands to pair with tea, with Lotus Biscoff emerging as the top favourite followed by Border Biscuits and Walker’s Shortbread. It is definitely impressive that Birmingham’s adoration for various tea options and flavours emphasises the city’s status as the Tea Capital of the country as a whole!”
