Tacos. Margaritas. Nachos. We love Mexican food in Birmingham. It’s quick, refreshing and colourful. And always hits the spot in the summertime. Some of our favourite spots in the city include Tierra Tacos, Habanero’s (which is great for cheap eats), and Bodega Cantina. But trust us, none compare to Birmingham’s newest Mexican restaurant, The Mayan.
Birmingham’s newest modern Mexican restaurant, doubling also as a specialist Mezcal bar, is heading to the city this July. But instead of the quick bites we’ve come to expect from the cuisine. The Mayan will offer a fine dining experience like nowhere else in Birmingham when opens at the Mailbox.
Diners can expect a fusion of traditional Mexican dishes with a contemporary twist. Expect everything from fine-dining-style tacos and empanadas to Mexican stews and ceviche. Meanwhile, a curated selection of mezcal and tequila-based cocktails should quench your thirst.
In terms of the decor, it’s an obvious nod to Mayan aesthetics (the ancient peoples that occupied Mexico long before the Aztecs and Spanish). A blend of black and gold provides the tone to most features, while jaw-dropping artwork adorns the walls. Meanwhile, the Mexican restaurant will also overlook Birmingham’s canals to further enhance the dining experience. No wonder it’s already being described as an “immersive culinary experience.” And, as close to a trip to Mexico as many of us are ever likely to come.
“We are thrilled to introduce you The Mayan, located on the vibrant canal side of the Mailbox,” said Sharath Sundar, Operations Manager. “Our vision is to showcase the richness of Mexican cuisine in a modern and refined setting. From the moment guests step through our doors, they will be enveloped in an atmosphere inspired by the essence of Mexico while enjoying an extraordinary gastronomic adventure. We are dedicated to creating an immersive experience for our guests.”
