Located between Edgbaston and Selly Oak, the Great Hall at the University of Birmingham is a time capsule into Birmingham’s history and future. While many visitors head straight for Birmingham’s big-name attractions like Cadbury World, Aston Villa Stadium, or Symphony Hall, few discover this hidden jewel of the city’s history. Why is the Great Hall really worth a visit?
The Great Hall is a time capsule into Birmingham’s history. Inside the hall, an ornate trompe l’oeil domed ceiling rises above the marble entrance, framed by graceful archways. The impressive acoustics have made it a sought-after location for choral album recordings by the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra, making it an exceptional setting for live music.
But, don’t be fooled, this space hasn’t just been used as a concert venue. The University’s founder, Joseph Chamberlain, insisted the purpose of the Great Hall was to create a ‘cathedral to learning’. The Hall has hosted everything from Prime Ministerial debate to television programmes with the likes of David Attenborough, Gordon Brown, and David Cameron gracing the stage. Furthermore, the Hall was used as a hospital during WW1 treating a total of 125,000 patients. It’s a place that really captures Birmingham’s bold character—full of history, and moments that have shaped the city and beyond.
The Great Hall’s events
The Hall is not open for general visits but is a space for the public to experience something magical within its walls. Hosting a range of lectures and conferences, perhaps the most exciting is the upcoming free Baggs Memorial Happiness Lecture, a lecture dedicated to ‘happiness’ which runs annually hosted by various different guest speakers.
And, taking advantage of its fantastic acoustics, the Hall hosts a variety of concerts, including those of the University’s own choirs like the University Upper Voices, and now is one of Birmingham’s Candlelight concert venues. These concerts are perhaps one of the most stunning ways to experience the hall, lit by thousands of candles while a talented string quartet performing tributes to some of the best known artists of the century.
