Heartbroken. It’s a word we’ve heard a lot since news broke that this year’s St Patrick’s Day Parade was “postponed”. Birmingham’s massive celebration of Irish culture only returned last year after a four-year hiatus, and, like that, it’s gone again. It’s a huge blow to the city and, most of all, to the Irish Quarter of Digbeth.
In true Irish spirit, Digbeth is pushing through the heartbreak and ahead with its St Patrick’s Sunday day celebrations. Everyone from The Old Crown to Nortons Digbeth has alternative plans ready to go – meaning the ‘coolest postcode to move to in 2025’ is still the place to be on Sunday, March 16.
What’s on at The Old Crown for St Patrick’s Day?
The Old Crown has a week of St Patrick’s Day celebrations prepared (March 10 – 17) including live Irish music, Six Nations screenings and flowing Guinness on tap. Birmingham’s renowned historian Carl Chinn will tell the true story of the Peaky Blinders and the city’s Irish communities on Monday, March 10, while you can catch a Fleetwood Mac Tribute Night on Friday, March 14.
But Birmingham’s oldest pub’s biggest event is happening all day on Sunday, March 16. The Old Crown will be embracing the St Patrick’s Day shenanigans with live performances from On The Sesh, Ire-ish, Jack Banting and Ash Sheehan – as well as plenty of Guinness! What other St Patrick’s Day events are happening in Digbeth?
Birmingham’s favourite Irish bar, Nortons also has huge St Patrick’s ‘Parade Day’ celebrations lined up for Sunday, March 16. Expect wall-to-wall live music, all day long, from The Father Teds, The Sore Doctors, Lampa, One for the Road, The Holy Show Band, Heed and Jack Banting, as well as DJ sets throughout the day.
Plus, you’ll find similar events at Hennessey’s and Cleary’s, while Autobrew is serving discounted Irish coffees and The Night Owl is throwing a FREE Irish-themed day party. Other venues worth checking out in Birmingham’s Irish quarter include The Anchor, The Big Bull’s Head, The Fountain, Redcorc and The Spotted Dog.
