Named after the Roman god of wine, things can get a little weird down in Bacchus Bar, which you’ll find under the Burlington Hotel on New Street. Dating back to 1398 – making it one of the oldest pubs in Birmingham – it has long been one of the city’s best-hidden gems thanks to its eclectic decor and selection of cask ales.
A spiral staircase will lead you down. Inside, uniquely themed rooms see the pub filled with everything from Roman mosaics, Gothic archways and Medieval suits of armour. Plus, ceiling painting, endless bookshelves, cherub statues and more. Whether you choose to drink in the Egyptian-themed room or the French dining room is up to you, but you won’t be forgetting your visit to Bacchus Bar anytime soon.
Like something out of the wizarding world of ‘Harry Potter’, the atmospheric, dimly lit pub has had a recent facelift, giving the iconic pub an exciting new look! Despite the works, many of its unique features have been maintained – keeping its traditional look and feel inside – but changes include updated seating and a new-look bar.
“Having worked at Bacchus for the past few years, it is my pleasure to reintroduce an old favourite of the Birmingham scene, come and take a tour through history as you explore our unique underground interiors – from Greek and Roman mosaics through to suits of armour and medieval archways,” said General Manager, Mark Tanner.
“Our most famous space, the Egyptian room, is truly unmissable, with its golden tomb paintings. Located beneath one of the city’s oldest streets, dating back to 1398, in the basement floor of the Burlington Arcade, we look forward to welcoming new and regular guests.”
It’s not all about the interiors at this must-see Birmingham pub, which is also beloved for its real ale options and selection of gins – and now cocktails! Guests can also tuck into all the pub classics including chicken and mushroom pies, fish and chips and prime steak burgers, as well as a delicious range of Sunday roasts.
