Birmingham is a big, bustling and sprawling city. But you’ll feel like you’ve flown to the calm of Scandinavia with a visit to this Sutton Coldfield bakery. Just eight miles from the city centre, Silver Tree Bakery is tucked inside this charming wooden chalet, situated in a small grove and surrounded by picnic tables.
The term ‘hidden gem’ gets used a lot, but this fairytale-like bakery definitely lives up to the name. You’ll feel a million miles from Birmingham city centre (although, in reality, you’re only a 20-minute drive away), as you tuck into freshly baked artisan treats off the track near Water Orton.
With ever-changing seasonal decorations, from Easter to Halloween to Christmas, the chalet’s iconic timber A-frame is always sparkling with charm. But we’re not just big fans because it’s incredibly cute (although that helps). Silver Tree Bakery absolutely smashes it, too, when it comes to baked goods. We’re talking bread, cakes, tarts, brownies, cookies, pies, sausage rolls, croissants, toasties.
With over 20 years of experience, everything is baked fresh in-house each day using only locally sourced ingredients. Beyond just the classics, the bakers like to get a little creative—keep an eye out for a Bakewell croissant (a match made in baked heaven) or an ever-changing variety of cruffins (from summer berries to key lime pie).
If you fancy packing up some goods for a day trip, the Tame Valley Wetlands are also within driving distance. The Tame Way, both river and canal routes, provides beautiful and hidden waterside walks for soaking up the local landscape, history and wildlife. Only made better when you’ve stocked up from Silver Tree Bakery.
Fans of the bakery can also now find a second site, more conveniently located in the heart of Sutton Coldfield itself at Gracechurch Shopping Centre, while a third bakery will be opening at Thorpe Constantine on April 3. You will find the same exquisite pastries and delicious cakes at all three sites.
