There are few finer cooks hailing from Birmingham than Glynn Purnell. The so-called ‘Yummy Brummie’, Michelin-starred and TV chef, is one of our city’s most brilliant residents. Purnell’s has stood on Cornwall Street since 2007 and was awarded a Michelin star in 2009. It still remains one of the best restaurants we have today.
So when we learned about Plates by Purnell’s – Glynn’s new tapas restaurant just a few doors down from Purnell’s, we knew it would be just as special. And that hunch appears to have been correct. As the Spanish restaurant has been added to the Michelin Guide. Named among the inspectors’ favourites in June.
Serving “small plates, great wine and cocktails,” Plates by Purnell’s provides the perfect pitstop for all. From a quick bite, while shopping or a full evening full of amazing dishes, guests are welcome to stay for two or three hours and graze, or nip in for a quick drink and a small plate of food.
The Michelin Guide said: “Located just around the corner from Purnell’s, this tapas bar offshoot is a narrow, snaking spot with authentic Spanish cooking. Choose your selection of small plates from a seasonally informed menu filled with tapas favourites like gambas, croquetas and patatas bravas. Quality cooking runs throughout, with the well-executed dishes showcasing excellent flavour combinations and seasonings. The added bonuses of welcoming service and good value for money could help to make this your new neighbourhood go-to.”
Opening on the site of the former Spanish café bar Pinchos on Edmund Street, Plates by Purnell’s is transformed by Glynn and his team. There are around 28 covers inside and a small number on the pavement outside. It serves plates inspired by classic Spanish tapas with influences from Glynn’s time in northern Spain. Expect dishes such as anchovies on toast, chorizo in red wine, cheese croquettes, grilled octopus, and Crème Catalan.
“Having worked in northern Spain, I have had a soft spot for pintxos or tapas for many years,” said Glyn. “In Spain, I used to spend my days off eating and drinking in small tapas bars, which is the same philosophy we want to breed here at Plates by Purnell’s.”
“My award-winning team and I have worked hard on making this a stunning venue which will serve some amazing dishes. There are some recognisable tapas dishes on the menu- all with an added sprinkle of Purnell’s magic. The food is tasty, satisfying and will put a smile on people’s faces. Whether you’re celebrating a birthday, an engagement, a graduation or just celebrating life itself, we look forward to welcoming you for delicious drinks and fantastic food in a place where you can have lots of fun and make lasting memories.”
