While alcohol was technically banned during the US Prohibition era, if you knew where to look, you could find it. Speakeasies boomed during these clandestine times, but had all but disappeared by the end of 1933. But secret, speakeasy-style bars have recently been making a comeback—from craft cocktails to early 20th century design.
Now, following the sold-out success of Cabaret and Cabernet, Musical Theatre Thursdays, and Icons Fridays, Downstairs at The Grand is set to get in on the action with its most immersive concept yet. Club 1879 will transform Saturday nights in Birmingham with a journey back to the Golden Age of speakeasy culture.
What is Club 1879?

In honour of The Grand Hotel’s original opening year, Club 1879 takes all the glamour, rebellion, and excess of the Prohibition era and channels it into an exclusive evening of live music, fine dining, and theatrical secrecy—and it officially launches across three nights (February 12 to 14), before continuing every Saturday night after.
Visitors to Club 1879 will enjoy a specially curated three-course menu to accompany the raucous live music programme. But, in true speakeasy fashion, most details will be kept underwraps at Club 1879. Mobile phones are banned and cameras sealed, while passwords will be used to unlock entry, and dates will be released exclusively to members.
“We’re so thrilled to reveal the next chapter of Downstairs at The Grand with the launch of Club 1879,” says General Manager, Johan Scheepers. “This is our most ambitious and immersive experience to date, a love letter to the building’s remarkable history and a celebration of everything we do best: exceptional live music, beautiful food, and unforgettable nights that feel truly special.”
