Everybody dreams of that perfect open water swimming spot: tranquil, natural and private. Somewhere away from the hustle and bustle of Birmingham, but not too far away. Well, your dreams may have come true, as Midlands Open Water is as close to perfect as you’ll likely ever come.
Just outside of Tamworth, the first open water swim venue in the Midlands is open all year round. So whether you’re dipping your toes in for the first time or training for your tenth triathlon, everyone can experience the benefits of open water swimming near Birmingham.
What makes this private, family-owned so special is that it’s sloped in and out, with no dropping off an edge. You can ease yourself into the water and get used to the temperature slowly. It’s also completely natural and uses no added chemicals.
What does Midlands Open Water offer?
There are two swimming options available. A 650m and a 300m course, both marked out by large yellow buoys, with easy access to the edge, so you can get out of the water wherever and walk back if you like. You can book either a 1- or a 2-hour swim session through the website.
And if you’re new to open water swimming, Midlands Open Water offers beginner courses to all adults over 16, where you can learn everything from health and safety to how to get used to the cold. You can also go paddleboarding on the lake.
Midlands Open Water is only open to swimmers 16 years of age and older. It’s only a stone’s throw away from the family-friendly water park, Cliff Lakes, if you fancy a fun splash that everyone can enjoy, with an array of water slides, climbing walls, and bouncy obstacles.
How much is it?
Swim sessions start from £8 for 1 hour and paddleboarding from £10, while lessons are £30. If you plan on visiting several times over the year, you may consider purchasing a Peak Season Pass for £185 that gives you unlimited open water swimming. Note: All bookings require a £20 annual insurance fee before you can step into the water
