Unless you’re a regular at NQ64, most people in Britain probably associate arcades with a bygone era, trips to the seaside, and broken machines at the back of a bowling alley. But in places like China, they are a glitzy and dazzling hub of youthful activity and a common dating spot – particularly, thanks to the notorious claw machines.
Now the the first East Asian-style arcade has opened in Birmingham’s Chinatown. Lucky Claw even boasts that it has “the easiest claw machine in the UK” – with a 20% success rate. And with £5 = 10 tokens, you’re basically guaranteed to take home at least one soft and colourful cuddly toy home on your next visit.
Grab a few cute creatures, and you can trade them in for a big-ticket prize like a giant stuffed animal (sorry Mum and Dad). You can’t miss Lucky Claw’s neon glow inside Han Dynasty Food Hall off Bromsgrove Street. Head up to the second floor, and you’ll quickly realise that fun doesn’t stop at the claw machines either.
The Chinese arcade also comes with its very own StepOn machine – a unique arcade game you won’t find anywhere else. Think of it as a giant dance pad designed for two to six players. Keep the rhythm and test your reflexes by stepping on the correct lit tiles in time – perfect for your next mates’ date. You’ll need to book in advance to play, however, from £11.99 per person.
Birmingham’s Chinese Quarter is beloved for its incredible restaurants – from Cantonese BBQ and Sichuan hot pot to the “largest selection of dim sum in the UK.” But Lucky Claw offers a unique experience in the area – and one that’s going to help burn off all those calories we’ve consumed hopping from one eater to another.
