Don’t be surprised this Saturday (April 22) if you find yourself sitting in the dark while dining out or enjoying a cocktail. It’s Earth Day, the day to demonstrate your support for the environment. Few are as committed to the cause as KILO ZIRO Café & Bar in Digbeth, however. The UK’s first zero waste and café bar will be turning off all front-of-house lights for the whole day to raise awareness.
Founded by the owners of Birmingham’s zero waste shop, The Clean Kilo, the Kilo Ziro Bar’s key focus is on reducing waste and its carbon footprint. It has created a unique concept where innovative methods are implemented everywhere. Ranging from serving wine from reusable kegs (cutting up to 96% of carbon emissions generated from glass bottles) to rice paper-printed passion fruits for cocktails.
To coincide with Earth Day, KILO ZIRO will launch its new Zero Waste Cocktails Menu, with cocktails made with sustainability at the forefront. The focus is on tackling food waste by using surplus/overripe fruit and veg and bi-product waste from their grocery store in their cocktails. This includes an ‘Upcycled Cherricano’ using spent coffee grinds to make a coffee liquor through infusion. While, for anyone that has worked in a pub before, KILO ZIRO has taken the first pull of beer (often wasted because it has been sitting in the line overnight) and turned the byproduct into beer syrup for their cocktails.
“Earth Day is a fantastic opportunity to raise awareness on all things sustainable – switching our lights off for Earth Day is not going to save the planet – but it will hopefully get people talking about the significance of Earth Day!” said Tom Pell, one of the co-founders of KILO ZIRO.
What is Earth Day?
Earth Day is an annual event in April to inspire awareness of, and appreciation for, our environment. It is a call to action for many to consider their daily usage and consumption by using our resources more sustainably. Businesses, organizations, and households across the country will do their bit towards reducing resources or cleaning up the mess we humans have left behind.
Join Kilo Ziro for an intimate candle-lit evening and experience the absence of a crucial part of everyday life that we take for granted – electric lights. Cocktails, refillable wine wall, local craft beer & ciders and cheeseboards and nibbles are all available on the menu on the night. To learn more head here.
