Joe Lycett is famous for his outlandish actions. The Birmingham-born comedian has changed his name to Hugo Boss to protest the fashion brand and arranged for the Birmingham Lord Mayor, Yvonne Mosquito, to open his kitchen extension. But this latest stunt takes the croissant.
Appearing on Richard Herring’s Leicester Square Theatre Podcast (November 16), Joe Lycett made quite a shocking statement – one to rile up the entire nation of France:
It’s going to be an unpopular theory, for the French particularly. I love a croissant. France is s*** at croissants. I’ve had better croissants in Salzburg, in Rio, in – Cyprus did a better croissant. They do a better one in Birmingham. What are they getting wrong in France?
That’s right. Joe Lycett believes you can get a better croissant in Birmingham than you can anywhere in France. Seeing as Joe is the new host of Channel 4’s Travel Man, who are we to argue with him over where to find the best quality croissants? What we can say is Birmingham’s croissants are nothing to turn your nose up at.
Where are the best croissants in Birmingham?
There are some brilliant bakeries in Birmingham. But if only a French pastry can satisfy your needs, head to one of these:
1. The Early Bird Bakery
The Early Bird Bakery make some of the most visually-stunning viennoiseries in town. Both the cherry bakewell croissant and the sticky toffee pudding croissant have impressed us in the past. But there’s no telling what out-there pastry they’ll come up with next.
28 High St, King’s Heath, Birmingham B14 7JT
2. Bakehouse
From one of our favourite pizzerias in Birmingham, Baked in Brick, also comes Bakehouse. Its selection of freshly baked, daily French pastries is simply divine. Grab your next croissant with a side pot of strawberry or lemon jam.
112b Holland Rd, Sutton Coldfield, Birmingham B72 1RE
3. Medicine Bakery
Not only is Medicine Bakery a brilliant cafe to relax in. It also sells flaky and heavenly croissants to go alongside your cappuccino. If you’re feeling a little more adventurous, the almond croissant takes this delicious breakfast staple to new heights.
