‘Dai pai dong’ is the term used to describe Hong Kong’s open-air food stalls. It’s the same atmosphere that Dan Lee, the former MasterChef: The Professionals winner, wants to recreate with his brand-new food concept of the same name. And we think he’s found the perfect home for it at Hockley Social Club.
Following the success of his four-month residency, Dan Lee will set up as a permanent street food vendor at Hockley Social Club from October 5, launching his new venture Dai Pai Dong. Described by Michelin-star celebrity chef Marcus Wareing as “a star in the making”, we can guarantee this is going to be a huge success at the street food haven.
Self-described as ‘your local neighbourhood hangout’, Hockley Social Club is exactly that. Overflowing with street food kitchens and bars serving over 500 seats, as well as live music, monthly comedy nights and a lifestyle market, Digbeth Dining Club‘s Hockley-based venue is a must-visit for all of Brum’s socialites. With previous vendors including Low ‘n’ Slow, Buddha Belly and Yardbirds, we think Dai Pai Dong will fit in well.
Hockley Social Club’s Jack Brabant said: “Having Dan and his team in over the summer has been an absolute joy and the quality of what they have been producing has been one of the best offerings in the city right now. It was an absolute no-brainer for us to offer him a permanent spot and me and the team are buzzing to see what his new menu has in store for us!”
The menu will showcase a range of brand-new dishes such as BBQ Szechuan Lamb Flatbread; Soy Steamed Chicken with Jasmine Rice and Lap Cheong; Brownie with Milk Miso Caramel and Homemade Ice Cream; Salt and Chilli Chicken Wings; and many more Southeast Asian-inspired dishes.
Dan said, “These past four months at Hockley Social Club have been incredibly exciting. I’ve felt such a close connection to our guests and built a strong bond with the team. Sharing my initial Asian-inspired dishes has been a dream, and the team and I can’t wait to serve up our new Dai Pai Dong menu.”
