Who had this on their 2024 bingo card? Britney Spears draws a picture of the Bullring and posts it on Instagram. The ‘Toxic’ singer isn’t exactly known for her sketches either, so it’s an odd choice to start with…
Shared yesterday (June 5), Britney posted her drawing with the caption, “Just a pen and church!” In front of what could only be the iconic Selfridges building, is what looks St Martin’s Church in the foreground. And we’ll say this, it ain’t bad!
Capturing Birmingham’s old-meets-new architectural landscape, she pulls off the spaceship-like shape, texture and design of the shopping centre, while the Grade II* listed church is drawn in fine detail. It’s the combination of both together that means this could be nowhere else in the world.
So the big question remains, ‘Why?’ Well, the Grammy Award-winning, once Princess of Pop, has been to Birmingham before. The last time, as far as we know anyway, was on her Piece of Me Tour in 2018 at Resorts World Arena (then called the Genting Arena).
Seeing as they’re about 10 miles from one another, it’s unlikely she would’ve spent much time sightseeing in Brum – especially as she had to be in Blackpool the next day. And as this was six years ago, we’re guessing she likely sketched the image from a photograph rather than from memory.
Which is what led us trawling through endless images of St Martin’s Church with the Bullring right behind it. Now, we’re not saying we found the exact photo, but the angle is very similar, don’t you think? Which looks like it was taken from the roof of St. Martin’s Rag Market.
So, at the very least, we think we’ve proved that Britney Spears has sketched the Bullring. We just need the ‘Oops!… I Did It Again’ singe to confirm it!
