Vegans and vegetarians, look away now! After making a name for itself in London and, more recently, Manchester, the renowned chophouse, Blacklock, will open a new restaurant in Birmingham this autumn – with a menu built on a variety of sustainably sourced cuts, from chops to steaks, all cooked over charcoal.
Founded in a basement in London’s Soho in 2015, Blacklock prides itself on serving high-quality meats whilst using the whole animal to make use of everything. This new restaurant, overlooking Cathedral Square, will transform the ground floor of St Philip’s House, once the home of the Cathedral’s Vicar, into a 100-seat restaurant and bar.
“We’re very excited to be embarking on the restoration of one of the most beautiful buildings in Birmingham,” said founder Gordon Ker. “We’ve looked high and low for the perfect spot, and St Philip’s House has such a rich history with plenty of stories to tell, and we’re looking forward to bringing it back to life, becoming part of the local community and filling the restaurant with plenty of happy guests.”
What is a chophouse?
A chophouse is basically like a steakhouse, but for all “chops” of meat. As a very modern take on an old-school concept, Blacklock’s meat all comes directly from sustainable family farmers in Cornwall while implementing a no-waste approach. Blacklock will also champion local Midlands produce, with brand-new dishes to be added to the Birmingham menu.
What’s on the menu at Blacklock?
More than their famous chops and steaks (all dry-aged for up to 55 days, by the way), the highlight of the menu has to be The All In. A huge platter of beef, pork and lamb chops piled on charred flatbreads to soak up all the meat juices and served with a selection of sides.
Alternatively, you’ll want to check out the award-winning Sunday Roast. Whole joints of beef, lamb and pork are roasted slowly over open coals – served with Yorkshire puddings, duck fat roast potatoes, seasonal vegetables, and an unlimited Blacklock gravy (which takes over a week to make!)
For dessert, the restaurant’s signature Granny’s white chocolate cheesecake is served tableside, straight from the dish with a “say when” approach to portion size… Meanwhile, the drinks menu will feature pip-to-peel cocktails, an extensive wine list and a selection of beers and ciders, including Blacklock Brews.
