To most Brummies, this might not sound like news. We’ve known for a while that Birmingham is the most exciting food destination in the UK. The Balti Triangle has made the city worth the visit alone. While it also contains the most Michelin-starred restaurants outside of London. Not only that, but Birmingham has some amazing places for pizza, pasta, burgers, desserts and vegan food too.
But now The Good Food Guide has said what Brummies have known for years: Birmingham is the most exciting food destination in the UK. The award was handed out on Monday (October 17) alongside the announcement for the Top 20 Most Exciting Restaurants For 2022.
A total of three brilliant Birmingham restaurants made it onto the list. The Wilderness, Grace & Savour, and Carters of Moseley were all chosen, coming in at 10th, 16th and 18th respectively. Their combined variety and quality were reasons for Birmingham’s extra accolade as the most exciting food destination.
The award wasn’t solely due to its high-priced restaurants, however. It was Birmingham’s diversity in flavour and quality across price ranges that solidified the win. The Good Food Guide also referenced other local restaurants, such as Opheem, “with its unmistakably curry-based but uniquely modern-British approach”, and Harborne Kitchen, “packing mass-appeal into posh nosh.”
“No other English provincial city is as well served with such a range of unique and frequently exceptional restaurants right across the price range,” said The Good Food Guide. “Nowhere but in Britain – and perhaps even more specifically in Birmingham – could this cooking occur.”
The Good Food Guide has provided the public with an independent guide on the best places to eat across Britain for over 70 years, starting in the early 1950s. The top 20 list was selected by independent and anonymous inspectors, paying for every meal in full to ensure impartiality. To see the full list of winners head here.
