Tucked away in a suburb east of Coventry, and just a 30 minute drive from Birmingham, is a chip shop that everyone is talking about. Simply frying your classic fish and chips, the West Midlands chip shop wasn’t exactly fishing for compliments but somehow has become the catch of the day online world.
Binley Mega Chippy has become a viral hit with memes, videos and parody accounts across TikTok and Twitter dedicated to the premises- and even a recreation of the shop on Minecraft. Some might think there’s something fishy going on with a fairly regular looking chip shop in Binley blowing up on social media but the internet works in mysterious ways…
Plus, the virality of Binley Mega Chippy has resulted in people travelling from across the country to the chippy to see what all the fuss is about. This week, dozens of people have queued up for their chippy tea, including a group who are said to have hired a minibus to come from Scotland to sample the chip shop’s menu.
One fan’s love for the crispy battered fish or satiating saveloy has even resulted in a jingle devoted to Binley Mega Chippy, causing many visitors to sing for their supper. The jingle has blown up so much it has featured in over 5,000 TikTok videos, some of which include visitors cradling their order with the shop’s now signature red and yellow sign in the background.
Despite it’s name, the prices at Binley Mega Chippy certainly aren’t mega either, even despite their new claim to fame. At £7.10, visitors to the Binley chip shop can enjoy a large cod and chips, with an optional dosing of salt and vinegar. Serving pies, pasties and pineapple fritters as well as battered mushrooms and burgers, TikTok has put Coventry on the map. And a new song in our heads.
