When you have one of the longest, biggest and most authentic Christmas markets in the UK, of course, it’s going to rank among the best. But Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market is more than that, it is the best. That’s according to new research, at least – and it’s back in less than a month!
We could’ve told you Birmingham’s is the best, but it’s nice that someone else crunched the numbers and is backing us up. Christmas Tree World looked at the country’s best festive markets in eight different categories, including the number of social media posts, the cost of a hotel, the distance from the train station and Google search volume.
Birmingham German Market had an overall score of 7.86 out of 10 – placing it just higher than Edinburgh (7.5) and Manchester (6.55). One of its biggest wins was its length. It will return to New Street and Victoria Square on November 1 and remain open until Christmas Eve. That’s an incredible seven weeks, or 54 days, making it the longest out of the top 10.
Elsewhere, the research found that the average cost of a three-star hotel was £88 a night, which is way cheaper than London (£316 ), Bath (£165 ) and Manchester (£115). On top of this, during last year’s market, there were 21,653 Instagram posts about the Birmingham Christmas Market and 1,032 TikTok posts on TikTok – making it one of the most popular on social media too!
Christmas Tree World also said, “The ‘second city’ of England, Birmingham, is number one when it comes to the quality of its Christmas markets, once again securing the top spot in the rankings. Birmingham’s markets are located in the city centre and are very easy for visitors to get to, as they are just a five-minute walk from the city’s main train station.”
Originally brought over from Birmingham’s twin city of Frankfurt in 1997, the Christmas market has grown to over a hundred stalls and attracts around 5.5 million visitors each year. It is now the largest authentic German Christmas market outside of Germany and Austria. Also returning to Birmingham on November 1, is the legendary big wheel and ice rink.
