Birmingham’s independent brewery scene is the talk of the country, with Attic Brew Co. often at the heart of discussion. It’s Strichley taproom was even crowned the best pub in the West Midlands a few years ago, but for somewhere more central, cast your eyes on its other, not-so-underrated bar in the Jewellery Quarter, The Barrel Store.
Tucked away in one of Birmingham’s historic railway arches, The Barrel Store serves many “hop-forward pale ales and IPAs” (that’ve already taken over many other Brummie venues’ taps) straight from the source—its flagship beer, Intuition, is one of the most popular beers in the West Midlands.
Beer enthusiasts should be extra excited by Attic Brew Co.’s unique barrel ageing project (starting in 2023) at The Barrel Store. The team has filled 21 neutral red wine barrels with various beers, with microorganisms inside slowly developing complex flavours—with unique tasting notes of vanilla, sherry, warm spice and oak!

For something a bit more normal, you’ll also find a wide range of traditional drinks, from cask ales to lagers, stouts and sours, as well as wine, cider, cocktails, and more for everyone else. Because this laid-back, vibrant bar isn’t just for beer-lovers… In fact, the main reason I wanted to write about it is for the on-site pizza!
Found at the walk-in venue from Tuesday to Saturday, Deathrow Pizza have quickly become local legends for its do-it-your-way pizza, where “no topping is taboo”. This means you pick the base, you pick the sauce, you pick the cheese, and with as many toppings as you want. And for just one price (better yet, it’s 2 for 1 every Wednesday)!
Together, Attic Brew Co. and Deathrow Pizza have created a lethal combination of intense flavour and no-holds-barred innovation. Whether it’s after-work drinks or a weekend mate’s date night, The Barrel Store will fit any vibe you’re after. To learn more about The Battel Store and Deathrow Pizza, head here.
