Get away from the big, bustling noise of Birmingham this weekend with a quick, car-free trip to this charming cathedral city. Less than an hour away by train, Worcester boasts all you want and need for a day trip—from unique architecture to independent boutiques, lively events and historic sites.
Worcester was once nicknamed ‘The Faithful City’ as a Royalist stronghold in the English Civil War—and marks the start of the legendary Monarch’s Way—but is probably best known today as the home of Lea & Perrins’ world-famous Worcestershire Sauce. But there’s much more to Worcester than both of these.
What to do in Worcester?

Arriving at Foregate Street Station (you can catch a direct, 38-minute train from Birmingham’s University railway station), head straight for the free Worcester City Art Gallery and Museum just a stone’s throw away. Inside the elegant Victorian building, you will find a myriad of family-friendly exhibitions, events and activities.
Other unmissable free museums include the Tudor House Museum, which explores the 16th-century timber-framed building’s history, from housing Tudor weavers to its time as a WWII warden’s post; and The Infirmary Museum, which delves into the history of healthcare and even features virtual surgery displays.

But the crown jewel of the breathtaking university city has to be Worcester Cathedral. Arguably one of the most architecturally interesting churches in the whole of England, it has stood since 1084 and is one of three hosts of the world’s oldest choral festival, Three Choirs Festival, next in Worcester from July 24 to 31, 2027.
Make sure to also check out the city’s 14th-century inn, The Cardinal’s Hat in Friar Street, for a drink, while The King Charles House on New Street is a great place to grab a bite and learn some British history: It’s said that, as King Charles II fled the Battle of Worcester in 1651, New Street residents held off Cromwell’s army.
From walking trails at Worcester Woods Country Park to boating out of Diglis Waterside & Marina, you will quite quickly be swept up by all that ‘The Faithful City’ has to offer. Because Worcester is much more than Lea & Perrins—it’s one of the UK’s most beautiful cities, and only a train ride from Birmingham.
