What was a simple church built to adapt to the rapid growth of the town, is now a heritage-listed building in the heart of Birmingham. Also commonly known as Birmingham Cathedral, the beautiful St. Philip’s Cathedral has served the Anglican-catholic community of Birmingham since 1715 and remains the oldest building in the city centre to still be used for its original purpose. Besides worship, you can visit this historic landmark every day at Colmore Row and even attend a concert at its sanctuary.
Experiencing Candlelight at St. Philip’s Cathedral is truly something special. As classical performances unfold beneath soaring columns and breathtaking stained-glass windows, talented musicians recreate beloved tunes in an evocative setting.

Background on St. Philip’s Cathedral
St. Philip’s Cathedral began as an Anglican church built and consecrated in 1715, designed by English Baroque architect Thomas Archer. His Borromini-inspired plan features a dome, volutes, giant pilasters, oval windows, rusticated stonework, and a balustrade with decorative urns. Still, its standout treasures are four stained-glass windows by Pre-Raphaelite artist Edward Burne-Jones depicting scenes from the life of Christ.
The cathedral also houses another treasure, a historic organ by Thomas Swarbrick, dating in part to 1715. It was originally placed in a west-end gallery and subsequently restored, enlarged, and modernised over time, most notably by Nicholsons in 1993. The cathedral has a long-standing musical tradition that includes regular evensong during school terms.
What can you do at St. Philip’s Cathedral?
