You won’t believe me, but these idyllic Italian-style gardens were once home to an amusement park and motor rally races. Going back to the 1800s, Trentham Estate boasted the most beautiful grounds, but by the 20th century, it was far from its best self. The millennium brought a new burst of life, however, and it’s had quite the makeover, don’t you think?
Trentham Gardens has undergone a multi-million-pound redevelopment since the turn of the 21st century—with James Alexander Sinclair of The Telegraph describing it as “the garden makeover of the decade.” Having also won multiple awards, including Countryfile Garden of the Year and Visit England’s Gold Accolade, this is a place of magic and wonder all year round.
What is there to see at Trentham Gardens?

The formal Italianate gardens, located at the heart of the Grade II* registered park and garden, are home to over 80,000 perennial flowers. Throughout, you will discover historic statues, elegant fountains and the ironwork frame of the Trellis Walk. Keep your eye out for the magical fairy sculpture trail, too!
But there are around 300 acres to discover—including the mile-long lake (where you can enjoy a leisurely cruise on the Miss Elizabeth boat), the ancient wildflower meadows, and the SSSI woodlands. While the Estate is also home to the ruins of Trentham Hall and the legendary Monkey Forest.

Elsewhere, wander the naturalistic weave of grasses—created by internationally acclaimed designer Piet Oudolf—in the Rivers of Grass; meander along a labyrinth of floral paths through 30 beds of tall and bold perennial planting; while wildlife enthusiasts may spot anything from reintroduced beavers to a family of Black Swans.
Meanwhile, the kids go wild at the adventure playground (full of swings, climbing walls, tightropes, roundabouts and zip lines), delve their toes into mud, bark, grass and pebbles on the Barefoot Walk, and children aged 5 and under can also test their driving skills at the Young Drivers Zone.
How do I get there from Birmingham?

You’ll find Trentham Estate just outside of Stoke-On-Trent. The quickest way is to drive via the M6, which will take you 50 minutes. Alternatively, you can catch a train to Stoke-On-Trent from New Street Station, where you can grab a 10-minute bus (No. 100) directly to Trentham Gardens.
How much does it cost?
A trip to Trentham Gardens costs £12.75 for an adult, and £8.50 for a child (3-15 years), while those under 3 go free. Your tickets will also get you 15% off at Trentham Monkey Forest, where you can meet 140 free-roaming Barbary macaques. To learn more about Trentham Gardens, head here.
