While Jude Bellingham, one of Birmingham’s greatest young prospects joined Real Madrid this summer, taking another step on his way to becoming one of the greatest in the sport. Another football great has joined Birmingham City FC. But not that sort of football, American football, as Tom Brady has bought a minority stake in the club.
As a seven-time Super Bowl champion, Tom Brady is an NFL legend and universally recognised as among the greatest players in history. Having retired in 2023, he holds the record for most Super Bowl victories and most Super MVPs. As well as earning the NFL Most Valuable Player Award three times, the NFL Offensive Player of the Year twice, and was honoured with multiple ESPY Awards in his 23 years playing. But that barely begins to scratch the surface of his achievements.
It’s safe to say that Tom Brady knows a thing or two about winning, which Birmingham City FC could learn a little more about if you ask us. So it’s great news that he has entered a partnership with Knighthead Capital Management LLC (“Knighthead”), to become a minority owner of Birmingham City Ltd. But what does that mean for the club? Well, don’t expect Brady to be just a pretty face to add to a glamorous marketing campaign.
Brady will become Chairman of the new Advisory Board, working directly with the Club’s Board and members of Birmingham City Football Club’s leadership. He will lend his experience and expertise across the club, including working alongside the sports science department to advise on health, nutrition, wellness, and recovery systems and programs. Plus, Brady will work on global marketing efforts and new commercial partnership opportunities.
Tom Wagner, co-founder of Knighthead, said: “Tom Brady joining the Birmingham City team is a statement of intent. We are setting the bar at world class. Tom is both investing and committing his time and extensive expertise. As Chair of the Advisory Board Tom will have a direct impact on the Club. The Men’s, Women’s, and Academy teams are going to benefit from the knowledge. The goal that Tom has committed to own is to make Birmingham City a respected leader in nutrition, health, wellness, and recovery across the world of football.”
He added: “A commitment to Blues fans was made on May 8, 2023, to add experts from the world of sport and football to the team, putting in place the building blocks for future success. With Garry Cook as CEO, Hope Powell as Women’s Technical Director and now Tom Brady we are off to a fast start. Success does not come overnight. It takes time. But when you have great leaders in place everything becomes possible.”
