The Birmingham Royal Ballet is bringing its legendary production of Swan Lake back to the stage, and this isn’t just another revival. It’s a heart-swelling, year-long celebration of Sir Peter Wright’s 100th birthday. Imagine a century of genius culminating in what is arguably the most “pure” classical ballet ever staged.
The Atmosphere
It’s a lush, moody masterpiece designed by Philip Prowse. When you step into the Birmingham Hippodrome (Sept 23 – Oct 3) or Sadler’s Wells (Oct 28–31), you are stepping into a world of dramatic, gothic opulence. The costumes are so detailed they’re practically characters themselves. Did you know the Master of Ceremonies’ cloak weighs nearly 40kg? You can almost feel the historical weight of the tragedy before a single note of Tchaikovsky’s score is played by the Royal Ballet Sinfonia.

The Soul of the Show
At its heart, this is the quintessential romantic tragedy of Prince Siegfried and Odette. While many modern versions try to “fix” the ending, Sir Peter Wright stays faithful to the haunting, spiritual conclusion where love transcends the physical world. During the “White Acts,” 24 swans move with a synchronization so perfect it feels supernatural.
