Secret Space Digbeth is found in the heart of the industrial and trendy area of Digbeth, east of the Birmingham city centre, and just off from the iconic and illuminated archways of Floodgate Street and neighbours to local brewers, Dig Brew. There, a dedicated space – situated on River Street with its frontage emblazoned with spray-painted robots – will be getting an extra special, centuries-old lick of paint (and quite the contrast) in the form of Michelangelo’s 34 frescoes, which will stretch from floor to ceiling.
Digbeth is no stranger to the art scene as many of the brick walls are adorned with unique street art murals, acting as a giant canvas for both famous and up-and-coming artists, therefore making it the perfect place to set the scene before seeing the Italian Renaissance masterpiece. Leave behind the hustle and bustle of the Birmingham city centre and step into the pages of the Book of Genesis, which Michelangelo has painstakingly brought to life with nothing but a paintbrush and a palate.
All this is possible thanks to high-definition photography and a special printing technique, which ensures every splash of colour, sweeping brushstroke and intricate detail has been faithfully reproduced for your viewing pleasure. Plus, you know you’re in good hands when LA-based SEE Global Entertainment (SEE™) are behind the wheel, with the company having produced a wealth of themed exhibitions including King Tut, Titanic and Frida Kahlo.
When you soak up the painted world of Michelangelo you might start to wonder a little about the artistic process that went into creating the work of art. Luckily, there will be informative signage and audio guides at hand for the curious; shining a more in-depth light on how the Sistine Chapel got its incredible ceiling decoration back in 1508.
Michelangelo’s Sistine Chapel: The Exhibition will transport you to the Vatican City in the blink of an eye, just without any of the stresses of organising flights or planning your exploration from a crumpled map. Instead, you’ll be able to take in the work of art without stepping foot outside Birmingham. If you’re looking to get your culture fix but haven’t managed to scrape together the funds to jet off abroad, then this is your answer. Make sure you grab tickets to witness the masterpiece from a never-before-seen perspective.
