Birmingham’s Frankfurt Christmas Market returns this weekend (Saturday, November 1) for nearly eight weeks, 54 days exactly, of festivities in and around New Street and Victoria Square.
If that wasn’t enough, Ice Skate Birmingham is also taking over Centenary Square the same day, while Christmas in Cathedral Square Craft Market returns the following weekend (Friday, November 7). What I’m saying is that Birmingham’s about to get a lot busier.
In fact, millions of people are expected to travel to the Second City over the Christmas period, with public transport and the high streets guaranteed to be filled with extra visitors to the city. However, some days will be worse than others…
What will be the quietest and busiest days of Birmingham’s Christmas market?

To help you avoid the seasonal rush, West Midlands Railway has analysed three years of booking data to investigate travel patterns to Birmingham’s major stations. Using the data, the train operator has estimated the most and least crowded travel days between now and Christmas Day.
The quietest day to travel to Birmingham’s Christmas Market will be Wednesday, November 5, while the second quietest is Friday, November 7. That’s only next week, but those hoping for a day a little closer to the Big Day should stop by on Thursday, December 18, for the third quietest.
When it comes to the busiest days of the Frankfurt Christmas Market, the most crowded dates are predicted to be at the end of November to the start of December, while none of the top three fall on a Saturday. These are: Tuesday, November 25, Sunday, November 30, and Tuesday, December 2.
Jonny Wiseman, WMR customer experience director, said: “We’re looking forward to welcoming visitors into Birmingham to enjoy all the festive events the city has to offer this Christmas. We expect trains to be busier than usual during this period, so please plan your journeys in advance and remember to be kind to staff and fellow passengers.”
