When Tommy Shelby first appeared on our screens, the Wright brothers had only made their first successful flight 16 years earlier. While aviation was well established by 1919, it’d be another 20 years before Birmingham Airport officially opened. But who could’ve predicted a hundred years ago that an airport restaurant inspired by a Brummie street gang would open in 2024?
Passengers flying from Birmingham Airport can now dine in Peaky Blinders-style at the Shelby & Co. Bar and Restaurant. The first-of-its-kind bar is set to become a key part of Birmingham’s departure lounge with space for 290 diners – as it aims to evoke an authentic interwar experience with its dark wood and atmospheric lighting.
The multi-award-winning Peaky Blinders, created and written by Steven Knight, reportedly wrapped filming on its movie, The Immortal Man last week (December 13, 2024). It’s set to come out on Netflix sometime next year, so this is your best way to sample more of the Shelbys first-hand until then.
“Over the past 12 months, one of our key focus areas has been expanding our bespoke airport bar and restaurant concepts,” said Cathy Granby, Business Development Director for SSP UK & Ireland. “Shelby & Co. really does bring this hugely popular show to life. What better way to celebrate all this city has to offer than bringing a flavour of Peaky Blinders to Birmingham Airport.”
What can we expect from the Peaky Blinders restaurant?
Shelby & Co. Bar and Restaurant replaces Factory Bar in the departures lounge. Customers will step into an “authentic Peaky Blinders experience” with a 1920s design, as well as waiters in show-appropriate attire. The new venue also offers an extensive themed menu, as well as showcasing local breweries and gins, to provide an “authentic taste of Birmingham.”
Just some of the items on the menu include breakfast items like Billy’s Breakfast Bap or a Blinder Benedict, while the all-day offering includes Finn’s Fish & Chips, The Tommy Burger and The Piggy Blinder toad in the hole wrap. There are also bespoke cocktails such as gin-based The Garrison and the Birmingham Sour.
