When Passing Fancies opened almost three years ago (September 2022), the aim was always to create a cocktail bar that offers “approachable luxury” yet with “kitchen at a house party” vibes. It’s safe to say that The Custard Factory spot nailed both—quickly becoming one of Birmingham’s most beloved cocktail bars.
Whether unwinding after work with an award-winning cocktail, or letting loose at the weekend with Passing Fancies’ famed bottomless brunches, there’s a reason for everyone to visit. Cocktail favourites include the Adult Ribena and Berry Cobbler, while the bright and airy location creates a relaxed and welcoming space.
So, with so much to love, why is it that Passing Fancies is closing on July 31? ‘There’s only so much you can do making drinks in an old car park.’ That’s the excuse given on Instagram at least, with owners Matt Arnold and Eve Green, alongside other members of the team, outlining new plans.
“This is not a drill. Our wonderful bar here in Digbeth will be gone by the end of July. This is the space that kick-started our journey as a bar. It’s inspired some of our favourite serves. We’ve thrown some crazy parties for you all, and we hope that we’ve made not only ourselves, but Birmingham proud.
“Of course, we’ll be sad to see her go, but there’s only so much you can do making drinks in an old car park. So the big question: How does Passing Fancies evolve? We don’t want to give too much away, because we’ve got so many sneak peeks of what PF2.0 is. But for now, we want to make you aware that we are closed here in Digbeth at the end of July.”
As you may have realised, this isn’t the end for Passing Fancies. While bookings are cancelled for bookings for August, a “new space in the heart of the Jewellery Quarter” is due to open in September. Expecting something new and exciting from the team, and will update you when we hear more, but for now, enjoy the original Passing Fancies while you can!
