The day has finally arrived in which McDonald’s has launched a vegan burger known as the McPlant in all restaurants across the UK. The creation of a meat-free alternative has taken the fast food chain three years of research and development but now it’s here in Birmingham. And just in time for Veganuary.

McDonald’s says the burger “delivers the same great taste and experience you would expect from a McDonald’s burger, whilst enabling customers to choose a plant-based menu option”. The iconic golden arches has lagged behind some of its competitors with its vegan offerings, with Burger King’s “Impossible Whopper” and KFC’s “Original Recipe Vegan Burger” both released in the UK in 2020.

The McPlant is modelled on a Quarter Pounder Deluxe. It contains vegan patty a produced by the US-based alternative meat brand Beyond Meat, and is served with bespoke vegan cheese made from pea protein created by McDonald’s’ dairy supplier Kerry Foods in Ireland, plant-based sandwich sauce, lettuce, onion, tomato, pickles, ketchup, and mustard.
The new McDonald’s vegan burger is now available nationwide, however, back in October 2021, the McPlant was available at select McDonald’s branches only. The McPlant was made available in 10 restaurants in Coventry from September 29, however is now available nationwide from January 5.
The new vegan burger costs £3.49 on its own and contains 420 calories – around the same as a meat-based double cheeseburger and has been certified by the Vegan Society. Find out more about the McPlant burger here.
