This is news that all generations will love. Whether you’re a fan of Roald Dahl’s original children’s novel, the 1990s movie adaptation, or the more recent musical, everyone loves Matilda. Now, the anarchic production about a strong and determined heroine with a vivid imagination heads to Birmingham in 2026.
‘Matilda the Musical’, which celebrates 15 years on stage this year, has won over 100 global awards, including 24 for ‘Best Musical’, and has been seen by 12 million people across 100 cities around the world. It continues to play to packed houses in the West End but will perform at Birmingham Hippodrome from Wednesday, July 1, to Sunday, August 2, 2026.

You could watch the film adaptation right now on Netflix, but nothing beats the real thing, right? Madison Davis, Mollie Hutton, Olivia Ironmonger and Sanna Kurihara will share the title role of Matilda. Meanwhile, Richard Hurst will play Miss Trunchbull, Tessa Kadler will play Miss Honey, Adam Stafford will play Mr Wormwood, and Rebecca Thornhill will play Mrs Wormwood.
Written by Dennis Kelly, with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin and developed and directed by Matthew Warchus, the production is designed by Rob Howell, with choreography by Peter Darling, orchestrations, additional music and musical supervision by Christopher Nightingale, lighting by Hugh Vanstone, sound by Simon Baker and special effects and illusions by Paul Kieve.
“When we first started working on the show, our aim was to make a lovely little jewel of a musical for the RSC’s Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon,” said Composer and lyricist Tim Minchin. “We never imagined that all these years later it would still be running in the West End, have been made into a film, and is now about to embark on its second tour of the UK and Ireland.”
Matilda The Musical comes to Birmingham Hippodrome from Wednesday, July 1, 2026, until Sunday, August 2, 2026. Tickets are on sale now and start from £25. They can be purchased by heading here.
