This is news that all generations will love. Whether you’re a fan of Roald Dahl’s original children’s novel, the 1990s movie adaptation, or the more recent musical, everyone loves Matilda. Now, the anarchic production about a strong and determined heroine with a vivid imagination heads to Birmingham in 2026.
‘Matilda the Musical’, which celebrates 15 years on stage this year, has won over 100 global awards, including 24 for ‘Best Musical’, and has been seen by 12 million people across 100 cities around the world. It continues to play to packed houses in the West End but will perform at Birmingham Hippodrome from Wednesday, July 1, to Sunday, August 2, 2026.
Written by Dennis Kelly, with music and lyrics by Tim Minchin, you could watch the film adaptation right now on Netflix, but nothing beats the real thing, right? Casting has yet to be announced, but ‘Matilda the Musical’ will be directed by Matthew Warchus, production design by Rob Howell, choreography by Peter Darling, orchestrations by Christopher Nightingale, lighting by Hugh Vanstone, sound by Simon Baker and special effects by Paul Kieve.
“When we first started working on the show, our aim was to make a lovely little jewel of a musical for the RSC’s Courtyard Theatre in Stratford-upon-Avon,” said Composer and lyricist Tim Minchin. “We never imagined that all these years later it would still be running in the West End, have been made into a film, and is now about to embark on its second tour of the UK and Ireland.”
Matilda The Musical comes to Birmingham Hippodrome from Wednesday, July 1, 2026 until Sunday, August 2, 2026. Priority booking for ‘Friends of Birmingham Hippodrome’ will be from 11am on Monday, March 24, 2025, and general on sale from 11am on Wednesday, March 26, 2025. Tickets start from £25 and can be purchased by heading here.
