Luminate calls itself the “UK’s number one festive light trail”, and while I’m not quite sure how you judge something like that, I can attest its events are quite spectacular. And the 1 million visitors it has welcomed nationally since it launched in 2019 would likely agree also.
Back at Birmingham Botanical Gardens this Christmas, Lumiate is ready to light up these ever-darkening winter nights, as it takes you on an illuminated journey ahead of the festive season. The light trail will glow with bespoke installations in this after-dark experience for all ages from Friday, November 28, to Thursday, January 1.
What will Lumiate look like in Birmingham?

Weaving your way through the gardens, you’ll soak up stunning light elements and interactive light play, all set to a beautiful soundtrack. Known for their unique installations, Luminate will light up the beautiful gardens with a display featuring butterflies, green fireflies and a Mirrorball Lagoon—fitting for this historic horticultural hotspot.
New for Birmingham this year, discover a stunning laser and searchlight show set to a medley of music. Plus, the ever-popular Make a Wish returns, where visitors can write their wish on a tag and pin it to the wall. The Luminate fairies will be looking to make a lucky visitor’s dream come true!

Janine Maycock, of the Luminate team, says: “We work hard to ensure Luminate is a fun and enchanting evening out. We work with the best in the business to create bespoke installations, and the trail is different each year, so there is always a surprise. We can’t wait to share the experience and look forward to welcoming people for the first time as well as our returning visitors.”
The floor projections will have botanical nods in their visual displays, as well as the cute penguins sliding around on ice, while mulled wine and marshmallows to toast on fire pits will be available on the route. More food and drink will be made available in the courtyard.
