You may not be quite ready to be thinking about it yet, but Christmas is less than 100 days away as of writing (Friday, September 18). With it comes the return of Lumiante, the “UK’s number one light trail”, to Birmingham Botanical Gardens, which has welcomed almost a quarter of a million since it launched in 2021.
Weave your way through 15 acres of historic landscape and diverse gardens filled with stunning light installations and interactive light play, all set to a beautiful festive soundtrack. But the lights aren’t just there to look at; they’re there to play with, in what’s billed as Birmingham Botanical Gardens’ most interactive light trail to date
Luminate
The trail begins at the Teardrop Tree, where the Gardens’ Copper Beech is lit up with hundreds of lights. Then, along the route, you will discover everything from illuminated swing chairs to an enchanted Fairy Glen—where fairy globes are suspended over the tranquil water of the Hugh Nettlefold Rock Garden.
In the Pinetum, the Majestic Mirrorball installation will bring a shimmer and sparkle to the giant trees and the pagoda. And new to Birmingham this year, the Christmas Corner: A magical cabin where you can post your letter to Lapland. Watch the Luminate Post Box light up as each letter is posted!
With plenty of interactive games en route, you can also challenge your friends and family to a drumming session or take on Ride the Lights (hop on a static bicycle and pedal as fast as you can to light up the pole!) Finally, set across the historic lawn, the Fantastic Light Flare Finale is guaranteed to take your breath away.
Behind the scenes
It takes around 600 hours to install the light trail, using around 10 miles of cable and 120,000 light bulbs to transform the Gardens. Visitors can also indulge in seasonal treats, from mulled wine and hot chocolate to loaded marshmallows and vegan crepes. All to enjoy next to toasty fire pits, where you can warm up.
Luminate runs from Saturday, November 28, 2026, to Saturday, January 2, 2027, while the ever-popular Make a Wish also returns. Just register online, then write your heart’s desire on a label and pin it to the wishing wall. Tag the team on social media and the Luminate fairies will be making one lucky visitor’s dream come true…

The trail is on accessible paths suitable for wheelchairs, mobility scooters, and pushchairs. There will also be dedicated evenings for those with special educational needs (SEND) on Tuesday, December 1 and Tuesday, December 8.
