From dragons to penguins and now aliens, John Lewis has introduced viewers to a whole host of characters in its emotive Christmas adverts over the past few years. These immensely popular ads get viewers in the mood for Christmas and we’re loving this year’s offering which tells the tale of a boy and an alien he finds in a forest.
Every year the Christmas season seems to start sooner than the last and this year is no different, with the ad having landed on Youtube a week earlier than usual. Lola Young sets the scene with her gorgeous rendition of Phil Oakey’s 1985 hit ‘Together In Electric Dreams’ – a song that even Gen Z is bound to be familiar with, appealing to the hope Christmas brings after a difficult couple of years during the pandemic.
Sitting on the bus Nathan sees something colourful crash to Earth and heads into the woods to find out what it is. There he finds Skye and the two soon become firm friends. He introduces her to Christmas, bringing her mince pies, Christmas decorations and plenty of other items, all of which can be purchased at John Lewis this year. This includes a jumper featured in the advertisement from which 10% of the sales profits will be donated to FareShare and Home-Start UK.
FareShare is committed to fighting hunger and food waste by bringing surplus food to those who need it, and Home-Start UK helps families experiencing challenging times. John Lewis also donated to these charities last year with its Give A Little Love campaign. Whilst this year there are no particularly cuddly or cute characters featured in the ad like Hare the Bear or Excitable Edgar, for example, the romance between two youngsters will bring a tear to your eye and it’s just as heartwarming as any of the previous ads created for the company at Christmas time.
