When Drayton Manor announced it’d be closing Shockwave last year, we couldn’t quite believe it’d be getting rid of one of its most popular rollercoaster rides. But out with the old and in with the new, isn’t that what they say? We should’ve known, however, that the family-friendly theme park would have something special line-up to replace it.
Only 30 minutes from Birmingham, Drayton Manor is set to have an incredible 2024 – with two new rollercoaster experiences. Shockwave, now known as The Wave, has been reimagined with a new height restriction of 1.2m, a surfing theme and a sit-down train to suit younger audiences. Plus, the brand-new train features lap restraints to keep riders secure.
Fans of Shockwave shouldn’t feel too upset, The Wave has kept Shockwave’s high speeds of 53 mph and level four G-Force at 12 feet high. The re-imagined ride just lets more “thrill-seeking families” enjoy the ride. The track also consists of four inversions, a unique zero-gravity roll, and a double corkscrew structure.
“Shockwave has always been such a big part of Drayton Manor since opening nearly two decades ago and we’re so excited to see The Wave preserve all the iconic thrills and fun,” said Victoria Lynn, Managing Director at Drayton Manor Resort. “By adapting the hair-raising characteristics of our iconic Shockwave, we’re excited to welcome young fans… to experience the UK’s most thrilling family ride.”
The Wave is now open at Drayton Manor, but theme park fans should keep an eye out for another new rollercoaster opening in 2024. As part of a multimillion-pound investment plan, the new Intamin family lift and launch coaster has been described as “an exhilarating rollercoaster experience for even the younger adventurers.” More details will be released on this soon.
In the meantime, there’s plenty to discover at Drayton Manor Resort that all the family can enjoy. From a 15-acre zoo to Europe’s only Thomas Land (Thomas the Tank Engine, if you were wondering), there are over 50 rides and attractions to explore. Last year, Drayton Manor was voted the best value theme park at the UK Theme Park Awards. To learn more about the theme park head here.
