When we learnt that Birmingham’s Soho Road Diwali would be cancelled this year, we were devastated. Up to 30,000 people were expected for the annual Diwali celebrations on November 1, but a “funding freeze” has put a stop to the festivities – an appeal lodged against Soho Road BID’s re-ballot has resulted in withheld funding.
Diwali, also known as the festival of lights, is celebrated by Hindus, Jains and Sikhs, and symbolises the spiritual “victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance.” Unfortunately, Soho Road, Soho Hill and Holyhead Road won’t be bathed in lights as we’d expected, in what would’ve been Soho Road Diwali’s 10th anniversary this year.
Thankfully, there’s some light outshining this bad news. The team behind Sandwell and Birmingham Mela, Europe’s biggest South Asian music festival, has stepped in to host the UK’s biggest Diwali Mela at Victoria Park in Smethwick. Best of all, the event is completely free and the whole family is welcome.
Taking place on Sunday, October 20, 1pm to 8pm, this year’s Diwali Mela promises traditional music, dance performances, food stalls, artisan crafts, and a professional fireworks display. It’s expected to attract thousands too, making it the largest Diwali celebration in the UK this year.
“We couldn’t let the cancellation of a significant event dampen the Diwali spirit,” said Danny Singh, Founder of Sandwell and Birmingham Mela. “We’re thrilled to host this free event, which not only celebrates Diwali but also brings together the wider community by incorporating elements of the Guy Fawkes tradition. It’s going to be a truly spectacular day for everyone.”
On top of celebrating Diwali, the Mela will also incorporate the Guy Fawkes tradition into celebrations and create a cultural fusion that honours both festivals. The Diwali Mela at Victoria Park will be a day-long event filled with festivities for all ages, with a breathtaking fireworks display ensuring that celebrations end on a high.
