Living in the West Midlands means that despite there being ample opportunities to see the Northern Lights in the UK, we just never get a look in (unlike our pals in Scotland) thanks to light pollution and, you know, the general presence of human population. That is, until now, thanks to acclaimed artist Dan Acher.
Bringing his iconic Northern Lights show to Birmingham for the first time, Brummies will finally get to experience the beautiful Aurora Borealis as part of a spectacular new installation – which is set to glow above the Bullring from 9th-18th February.
Kicking off at 4pm today (9th February) as part of an epic launch event, visitors will be able to enjoy the incredible visual art show in the Birmingham skies, accompanied by a stunning soundtrack to amplify the experience.
The show has previously graced the skies in major cities such as London, Paris and Berlin, so we’re feeling pretty blessed to have been chosen as the next location for Dan Acher’s project. The Northern Lights are replicated by shining beams of light through particle clouds, and the installation even constantly changes to reflect conditions such as wind, humidity and temperature – giving an authentic experience for visitors.
Dan Acher said: “Borealis has been produced to shift our emotional experience of familiar urban landmarks and awaken a shared conscience, by creating something magical. Something that shouldn’t naturally be there. Variations in the atmosphere make Borealis an ever-changing installation – it’s always unique. At the end of the day, we can only set the stage for the effect to appear. Ultimately, nature holds the final say.
“Gathering under its hypnotic dance we come together, beyond our differences, in the face of something far greater than us. As our planet’s climate breaks down, the question arises: will technology one day replace everything that nature currently provides for us?”
Danielle Bozward, Marketing Manager at Bullring & Grand Central adds: “For 20 years, Bullring has proudly sat in the heart of Birmingham – a city that embraces arts, culture, and innovation in abundance. I am so excited that we are lucky enough to welcome Dan and his phenomenal installation; giving the city a chance to experience a once-in-a-lifetime moment.
“The Northern Lights are one of the world’s most famous natural wonders and this half term, shoppers, families, couples, and friends can get a taste of it right here at Bullring.”
The event is free to attend, and guests can enjoy it daily from 9th-18th February, 4-9pm.
