Birmingham Has Been Crowned The UK’s Kinkiest City (And One Of The World’s) – And It’s Even Kinkier Than Amsterdam, Berlin And Rome

Don’t be squeamish; everybody does it. Sex is a truth of life, literally. But some of us are enjoying ‘it’ a little more than others. Whether buying toys for yourself, dabbling in BDSM with a partner, or delving into sex parties, Birmingham has proved itself as the kinkiest city in the UK—and (one of) in the world.

A new study by an Australian sexual wellness company, Pleasure Chest, has analysed the world’s most populated cities to see which are the kinkiest. To conduct the study it looked at the number of ‘sex toy’ searches, searches for ‘BDSM’, sex toy market sales per capita, average sex toy market sales, the number of sex-related events, and the number of sex shops.

With these factors combined into a ‘kink rank’, Birmingham ranked as the 10th kinkiest city in the world (and number one in the UK)—that’s higher than Amsterdam, Berlin and London. Birmingham’s sex toy market sales are estimated at more than £13.8 million—making it the 5th highest in the world (£7.3 million per 10,000 residents)

London had the most sex events of any UK city this year, with 162, but Birmingham wasn’t far behind with over 104 sex-related events this year (the 9th highest worldwide). Brummies also had 105 ‘sex toy’ searches and 690 ‘BDSM’ searches (both per 10,000 residents). Birmingham only has 19 sex shops, however.

Los Angeles ranks as the kinkiest global city, with its residents spending $31,206,042 per capita on sex toys. Chicago, ranking second in the overall kink rank, is the world’s biggest buyer of sex toys, with its population spending $44,478,243 on the goods. Milan offers the highest number of sex events around the world, with 857 events coming up across 2025.
