Birmingham’s New Street is the busiest train station outside of London. And at the busiest time of year, during the festive period, it only gets busier. But the platforms will look oddly empty this Christmas.
Major engineering work will be taking place at Birmingham New Street station during Christmas. This is expected to significantly affect journeys to, from or through this key station—so start making your alternative travel plans now.
Between Christmas Eve (Thursday, December 24) and Bank Holiday Monday (December 28), you won’t be able to Birmingham New Street.
This includes local, regional and long-distance journeys that normally use the station. Although no trains will be running anywhere across Britain on Christmas Day or in the Midlands area on Boxing Day anyway.
Why is this major engineering work happening?
Much of the overhead line equipment that powers electric trains through New Street dates back to the 1960s and urgently needs replacing. As part of a 3-year, £13m programme, it will reduce faults and improve long-term journey reliability.
Three years, you say?
You heard us right. Further work is expected to take place over the same Christmas period in 2027 and 2028.
How will I get home for Christmas?
With many of us travelling at Christmas to visit family and friends, travel alternatives may involve using rail replacement buses and the local bus network. Train operators have yet to confirm travel advice and alternative options, but Christmas timetables are expected to be available from early October.
