I’ve tried every hangover cure there is: coconut water, paracetamol, raw egg yolk, a Bloody Mary, miso soup, but nothing hits the spot like a bacon sarnie and a bottle of Coca-Cola. Of course, the best cure is preemptive, but then I’d have to stop going to parties and pubs altogether – and that’s not happening!
Because I love a drink or two or three or four… And so does Birmingham, it seems. The alcohol-free beer brand Mash Gang has analysed over 5.5 million Google searches across every UK city to uncover where people are searching for hangover cures the most, and the Second City has come out on top.
Birmingham has officially been crowned the most hungover city in the UK. Between its legendary Broad Street bar crawls and dancing all night in Digbeth, Brummies are paying the price of partying. Meanwhile, Coventry and Wolverhampton also crack the Top 10, showing that the West Midlands loves a tipple, maybe a bit too much.
Across the UK, in the past month, there have been 178,000 searches for “hair of the dog,” and the search term “hangover food” has been looked up 72,000 times. But not everyone wants to wake up over the weekend feeling rough. At the other end of the scale, Ripon has emerged as England’s least hungover city, followed by Carlisle. So you know where to go if you’re after a booze-free day trip somewhere!
With over a third of UK drinkers (38%) now saying they consume low and no alcohol, searches for things like ‘zebra striping’ have also increased. Zebra striping is where people bounce between alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks to soften the impact of drinking. And searches have increased by 424% in the past quarter.
