Cathedral Church of Saint Philip, more commonly known as Birmingham Cathedral, is one of the city’s oldest landmarks. Built in 1715, the cathedral is the third smallest in the UK, but what it lacks in size it definitely makes up for in beauty. The Grade I-listed building is a rare example of English Baroque architecture, complete with scroll‑like volutes, giant pilasters and a grand dome inspired by Italian Baroque architects like Borromini. And this season, this iconic Birmingham cathedral is hosting a special Disney Candlelight concert featuring songs from Frozen, The Lion King and more.

Why was Birmingham Cathedral granted Grade I-listed status?
Most cathedrals in the UK are Gothic masterpieces, but that’s not the case for this Grade I-listed gem. It’s a striking mixture of English and Baroque architecture on a parish‑church scale. The architect Thomas Archer was inspired by Baroque styles after touring Italy in the early 1700s. The cathedral houses four large stained‑glass windows and fluted pillars with Tuscan capitals as well as a coffered ceiling that adds a more opulent, High‑Victorian layer.
Candlelight: Disney Love Songs at Birmingham Cathedral
What would our childhoods have been without Disney? Tales of high school romance, talking teacups and young lion cubs returning home weren’t just stories—they helped shape how we understand love, friendship, courage and destiny. Now, Candlelight is bringing a tribute to Disney’s most iconic love songs to Birmingham’s most historic cathedral.
This season, “Breaking Free”, “Beauty and the Beast” and “Can You Feel the Love Tonight” and many more Disney classics will sound inside Birmingham Cathedral while performed by a string quartet amid thousands of twinkling candles. As Disney classics fill the air, the historic nave becomes a storybook brought to life, and their melodies blend childhood nostalgia with cathedral‑worthy grandeur.
