This city wouldn’t be what it is today without its legendary canal system. In many ways, Birmingham’s canals—consisting of more miles than Venice, don’t you know— fuelled the Industrial Revolution. But while its importance is undeniable, it also carries many gruesome and tragic tales that cannot be ignored.
This Halloween, set off on a chilling after-dark cruise with Brindley Cruises that delves into the “violence, tragedy and unexplained history hidden along the waterways.” This immersive ghost cruise through Birmingham’s canals features true stories, local legends, live theatrics, and interactive scares.

You will hear chilling tales of murder, drowning and fatal accidents, including the legend of the Towpath Ripper and other sinister figures said to have stalked Birmingham’s canal network. But be warned: this cruise isn’t suitable for children under 15 years old or people of a nervous disposition.
Setting off from Brindley Place, behind Sea Life Centre, the boat sets off after dark, combining live guided storytelling with theatrical performances, special effects and interactive encounters—expect smoke, pyrotechnics and strobe lighting, as well as tales based on documented events, local legends and evidence-based accounts.
