If you’re after somewhere to eat out with all your mates, somewhere with a huge amount of space with enough variety to satisfy all your needs, then a food hall is often your best bet. They’re a dime a dozen in Birmingham—Alfred Works, Society, Herbert’s Yard, Saint Paul’s Market, etc.—but one of the most unique can be found in the Chinese Quarter.
Having opened in 2018, Asia Asia Food Hall isn’t exactly new, but remains a hidden gem to many Brummies. Inside the two storeys of an abandoned 1960s office block, you will find a jam-packed, pan-Asian menu serving everything from delicious Thai and Vietnamese food to incredible Korean, Chinese and Japanese dishes. You can also find Asian beers, soft drinks, and matcha whippy ice cream.
How does Asia Asia Food Hall work?
The best thing about eating at a food hall is there’s no awkward bill-splitting. You order and pay for whatever you want, with diners encouraged to sample from as many different vendors as possible. But even so, at Asia Asia Food Hall, which is open all week from 11 am to 9:30 pm, things are a little different.
Using top-up cards, you add as much money as you want (with a £2 deposit for the card), and then take this card to pay for items at each vendor you would like to buy food from. Simply return the card at the end of your visit to refund the remaining balance and deposit.
What can you eat?
There are six individual restaurants across two floors. Floor one offers: Vietnamese street food specialist Pho Viet; an assortment of Korean Food, from fried chicken to bibimbap; and sushi spot Sakura (meaning cherry blossom in Japanese); plus the Drinks Bar serves a variety of soft and alcoholic beverages. Head to floor two for: Traditional Malatang, serving a type of Chinese hot pot; Bangkok Cafe for Thai street food; and Chinese-style BBQ And Dumplings.
