Sure, the country is full of amazing Christmas markets this time of year. But only Birmingham has the largest authentic German Christmas market outside Germany and Austria. Only the Frankfurt Christmas Market attracts 5.5 million visitors each year. What we’re saying is, that we know we have the best Christmas Market in the UK.
But a study from Christmas Tree World (who you’d think would know a thing or two about what makes Christmas special) has concluded the Birmingham Christmas Market is undoubtedly the best. Originally brought from Birmingham’s twin city Frankfurt in 1997, the now iconic Christmas market sees over a hundred stalls fill New Street and Victoria Square.
The Christmas tree retailer, analysed Google search results, Instagram mentions, TikTok tag views, the duration of each market, and the average price of a hotel in each city to conclude the winner of 2023. Knocking last year’s number one, Manchester, off the top spot, the Frankfurt Christmas Market received a Christmas market score of 8.59/10.
It racked up 2 million TikTok views, 20.3k Instagram mentions and 346,200 Google searches this year! Another positive was the market’s length – lasting an incredible 53 days. Although it’s not the longest in 2023 surprisingly, that title this year belongs to Nottingham, lasting 55 days. Birmingham also has some of the cheapest nightly hotel stays (£94 for 3* hotel and £116 for a 4* hotel, making it an easy market to visit.
Able to call itself the second city of something, Manchester was the second-best UK Christmas market for 2023, with a score of 7.69/10. It recorded the highest number of annual Google searches (722,300) and the highest volume of TikTok views (13.1 million). Meanwhile, Edinburgh is officially the most picture-perfect Christmas market with 51.3K Instagram mentions, and Newcastle is the most affordable to visit overnight.
