If there’s one table that Aston Villa won’t be too bothered about sitting in the bottom half of this season, it’s this one. After qualifying for the Champions League for the first time last season, Unai Emery’s men have lofty ambitions for 24/25. But Villans should already be celebrating that they will be spending slightly less than the average Premier League fan this season – finishing 13th overall.
According to new research by online car buying service webuyanycar, the average Premier League fan will spend £5,014.01 on travel, pints, pies and crisps, and will clock up a whopping 2,650 miles throughout the season. That’s compared to Villa fans who will only £4,911.69 overall and cover 2,202.8 miles – slightly less than West Midlands rivals, Wolves (£4,941.17)
How was the average cost decided?
The idea is based on that travelling fans will travel by train or car and treat themselves to pies, pints and packets of crisps at the game. The study shows Brits will drink 1.65 pints of beer and eat 0.94 packets of crisps, while 37% of fans will also indulge in a pie, during each football match. It also takes into account train and fuel costs – with only 27% of respondents likely taking the train to away games.
With this in mind, the average Villan will each spend £1,320 on train fares, drink 627 pints, buy £581 worth of pies and eat 357 packets of crisps across this Premier League season. Across the 380 games, Villa Park’s £3.60 pies can be credited for bringing in a bill just £19 less than Leicester fans in 12th. Meanwhile, Newcastle United fans will spend the most (£5,571.96) and Tottenham Hotspurs the least (£4,835.20)
Richard Evans, head of technical services at webuyanycar, said: “The Premier League is a staple event, bringing out the best in competitiveness between teams and fans alike, so it’s fun to add to that by ranking teams in terms of pints, pies, travel and overall spend across the season. While it’s probably no surprise to see Newcastle top the table, it is surprising to see just how much fans of all teams will be travelling to watch the matches.
What isn’t taken into account is the cost of a season ticket, however, with Aston Villa having the sixth most expensive for the 2024/25 Premier League season. The cheapest adult season ticket price at Villa Park is £640 (+4.9% on last year). That might be well below Arsesnal’s at £1,073, but is still greater than Wolverhampton Wanderers’ at £525 and Premier League champions Manchester City’s at £425.
Aston Villa’s Premier League season kicks off on Saturday, August 17 against fellow claret and blue wearers, West Ham at 5.30pm.
