Taking care of our mental health can be just as important as looking after our physical well-being. In this ever-fractured, increasingly online world, finding someone to talk to is more important than ever. That’s why this 24/7 mental health text service, available to all people living in Birmingham and Solihull, is so necessary.
The all-age service is a partnership between Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust and Shout—the UK’s first 24/7 text messaging support service, powered by the charity Mental Health Innovations—offering free and confidential support at the end of your fingertips.
How do I get mental health support?
Whether you’re experiencing anxiety or depression, stress or loneliness, or any other mental health issues, you can text ‘Space’ to 85258. This will connect you with a trained mental health professional at any time of day. Perfect for anyone who isn’t ready to speak on the phone or in person.
The Shout service is free, anonymous, and will not appear on any phone bills, and you don’t need to register or download anything. You will first receive four automated messages before being connected to a qualified mental health professional, who can provide support and signpost local services—like talking therapies and crisis cafés.
“Building on the range of services that are currently available, this localised approach offers a truly accessible first step for people who may not yet feel ready or able to talk face-to-face or over the phone,” said Roísìn Fallon-Williams, Chief Executive of Birmingham and Solihull Mental Health NHS Foundation Trust.
The 24/7 crisis text message service aims to support and reduce pressure on services by offering an alternative route to support—especially for those waiting for further help or seeking early intervention. Conversations usually last between 45 minutes and one hour and end when you feel calmer.
