From Black Sabbath to Napalm Death, Birmingham has always been a place that celebrated the alternative. But the city’s alt community has been left without a natural home since the recent closure of The Oasis Market. Luckily, there’s a new “one stop shop for the weirdos in Birmingham to shop local, small and abit creepy”
Hoping to open this late May at Digbeth’s Zelling Building, The Goth’s Playground is a brand new alternative independent space for the odd, weird and macabre. Here, you’ll find alternative independents selling everything from taxidermy to piercings, as well as one-of-a-kind clothing, fragrance, and jewellery.
Ready to rival Merlin’s as Birmingham’s de facto hub for Goth culture, it will focus on “the darker side of products from all categories.” Which means, expect to pick up anything from ritual items and Ouija boards too. The Goth’s Playground will have an in-house piercing station, and even hopes to have a permanent tarot reader too.
The Goth’s Playground also aims to move into music projects by 2026. In the meantime, you can find its pop-up market selling weirdo wares at The Flapper this Sunday, April 13, from 11am to 4pm. Then again on May 18, June 8, July 6, August 3, September 7, October 26 and December 7. To learn more head here.
